Third Sector Awards 2019: Fundraising Team of the Year – Clic Sargent

Category sponsored by WPNC

How much money was raised?

In 2018/19 Clic Sargent’s gross income will stand at £29m, a 21 per cent increase on 2015/16 and the highest amount in the charity’s history. Regional fundraising has increased by 13 per cent and the 2018 Christmas campaign had a 50 per cent uplift, despite the impact of the General Data Protection Regulation on donor numbers. Corporate fundraising has also achieved its best year ever: a partnership with Morrison’s raised £3.5m and has been so successful that Morrison’s staff voted to extend the partnership for an additional year.

What is the team’s approach?

In 2017, the charity developed a holistic approach to fundraising, called One Team, One Target, aiming to combat declining income. Barriers to successful income generation included front-line workers’ reluctance to engage service users with fundraising, teams working in isolation rather than collaboratively and a transactional, one-off approach to donations rather than nurturing ongoing relationships with donors. One Team, One Target aimed to make everyone in Clic Sargent a fundraiser.

What did it do?

The charity encouraged fundraising teams to support each other, an objective that is reported against at annual appraisals. Meanwhile, an internal communications campaign took One Team, One Target to hospital and community teams throughout the UK, highlighting the pivotal part social care staff could play in connecting the charity with those closest to the cause. To tackle reluctance to connect service users with fundraisers, evidence was gathered to show how opportunities to engage with fundraising could help parents and young people regain some control and get through their treatment. Services staff were set a Key Performance Indicator for number of referrals into fundraising. The charity also developed a programme called Service User to Supporter, which helped develop deeper and more impactful relationships and a team of powerful advocates who inspire others to fundraise.
